The recent !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! Shelby Cobra got me thinking. What was/were the last true big engine, little car(s) from a major/mainstream auto maker? The closest thing I can think of is the current Shelby GT500, especially in the Super Snake with 850 HP, but everyone knows that isn't really a small car.

The Nissan 300ZX with the twin turbo 300 HP engine comes to mind, but yet again not exactly small.
There's also the twin turbo Toyota Supra with 320 HP. Also not entirely a small car.
None of these are small cars, and only the Mustang has a truly big engine.

The size of the engine makes every car a small car.

Actually, having seen the new one up close and personal last March, I have to say it's smaller than it looks, so I can get behind that!

The Taurus SHO with the Yamaha engine?

I considered the Corvette, but it's kind of a generic pick, seeing as how they all have "big" V8 engines. If I had to pick a Corvette I'd go for the obvious choice of the ZR1.

The Z06 has more cubic inches, even though it's still a small block.

M3.
Again, not as small as they once were, but what is nowadays?

Doesn't Caterham make a 7 with a ridiculously large engine?
![]() 05/03/2014 at 23:12 |
|
That's a specialty car, and they make a 7 with a ridiculously powerful engine for the car .

You're right about that, but physically it's no bigger and it's less powerful. It's six of one, half dozen of another. You can argue it either way.

C55 AMG Not a light car but remarkably small in scale considering the 5.5L.

No, the Ford Festival that somebody stuffed the SHO in the back of. Leon's got one.

Aston V12 Vantage. Huge V12 in Aston's smallest car.

This, yeah. Somehow I managed to forget about one of the most desirable cars currently in production. It's probably the best example of "big engine, little car" from any of the big manufacturers.
